As many of you already know, I've had an unidentifiable breathing problem my entire life. I would wheeze and cough uncontrollably during heavy exercise, would constantly have to yawn and take deep breaths because of 'air hunger' (a very uncomfortable sensation where you constantly feel as though you don't have enough oxygen despite being able to breathe), and sometimes would have trouble staying asleep. I'd also tire out very easily.
It eventually got to the extent where it was hard to breathe when I wasn't doing anything at all. You can imagine the impact this has had on my training (and especially tournament fighting, where stress would emphasise the effects).

I've been going to various doctors for about 6-7 years to get it sorted out, and nobody has been able to figure out what's wrong. I've been diagnosed with asthma, possible food intolerances and Vocal Cord Dysfunction, but none of the treatments proved to help.

My Muay Thai instructor noticed I was having difficulties training so he recommended I see a fellow called Gonzalo Bascunan, who is a very well renowned naturopath and iridiologist. Apparently Bill Clinton and a few other famous people have gone to see him, he's that good. People line up outside the centre he works in at 6am in the morning just to see him; when the doors open, they grab a ticket number and wait. The queues get MASSIVE. My instructor refers to him as a 'witch doctor'. =P

All this guy does is look into your eyes and he knows exactly what's wrong with you. He doesn't want you to tell him why you came, he just knows. He also can pinpoint elements of your life and personality without you telling him anything; apparently a girl who went to see him was told that she was wrecking a relationship (she was sleeping with a married man) and she smoked dope. He's got some freaky interpersonal powers.

Anyway, yesterday I got to the centre at about 6:45 to see him; fortunately that day there weren't that many people already there, so I got lucky. Upon meeting him, I discovered he was quite a character. Doesn't sugar-coat stuff or cut corners, he's blunt and frank with what he says. But he's very conversational and engaging. He was pretty funny as well, but he cracked all his jokes with a straight face so it was difficult to tell when he was being serious. xP;;

I sat down, he checked my eyes for about five seconds, sat down at his desk and said "You have breathing problems."

I was like ":o Yeah..."

He told me that I had a deep fungal infection running through my entire respiratory tract, including my sinuses, that had been there for years. It had gradually been getting more severe, in hindsight of how my symptoms had worsened over time. I was FLOORED. I couldn't believe no doctor had EVER been able to pick up on this, even with all the X-rays and blood tests and ventilators. I told Gonzalo this, along with all the conditions I had been told I had, and he just waved his hand and said simply, "Bullshit. They are all full of shit."

He advised me to take an assortment of herbal supplements, along with drinking two litres of water a day, and said the infection would be gone within six weeks. He then went through a list of symptoms (that I had) caused by said infection that he said would disappear, even though I hadn't told him I was even suffering from them. o,o This guy was amazing.

There was one symptom that he mentioned would go away, that being 'neck pain'. I remember thinking, "But I don't get neck pains". Tonight at training, I was doing sit-ups; as a note, I've never been able to do them without putting my hands behind my head for support because the back of my neck would start to hurt and cramp up. I was very surprised to discover that there was no pain at all, and I could do them normally. Wow.

He also gave me some very important advice on fighting, primarily to 'fight with your mind', analyse your opponent and be smart rather than attack blindly. Somehow, he knew that I'm not much of a thinker when I fight; I tend to barrel in and use brute strength, which sometimes works but is usually rather catastrophic (for me).
He said, "The fight is in the mind, not the body."
Theoretically I already knew all this (I just don't know how to employ it), but the point is that he could see this flaw in me without me even saying anything.

As I left, he said "This is the start of a new life for you."

I hope so. :)

Heh, fungus. Come to think of it, the more virulent strains would have noticeable symptoms other than difficulty breathing, so it probably is just a massive infection. Immunosuppressed any? ;)

Hope the treatment works for you.
